Mayrhofen - Skiing

Mayrhofen enjoys the use of 2 mountains, the Penken-Horberg, linked to the Rastkogel-Eggalm, and the smaller Ahorn. Although you can't ski all the way down to Mayrhofen, you can either take the gondola directly, or try the unpisted Finkenberg or Hippach routes if there is sufficient snow cover. Generally the Ahorn is better for beginners, as the runs around Rastkogel can often be mogulled.
Experts meanwhile can enjoy the suicidal Harakiri run, the steepest in Austria, at 38 degrees (78%!), or for those slightly less confident, the unpisted trails to Hippach are a good challenge. Intermediates are the best suited at Mayrhofen, with some good long runs on Rastkogel, and Eggalm. Ahorn again, has more gentle blue runs, great for nervous intermediates. If at any time you fancy a change though, each of the main valleys under the Ziller pass makes for a good days skiing. Beginners can enjoy either the Ahorn nursery slopes, which are high, sunny and reasonably large, or the Penken nursery slopes. Off-piste, there are some great trails if the snow cover is good.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the resort for boarders is the Vans Penken Park:
Pure freestyle mania – that's what snowboarders and freeskiers can look forward to in the Winter 2007/08 season at Mayrhofen. To kick off the new partnership with Vans, a highly trusted label in boardsports, designers revamped the snow park to include demanding obstacles and turned an entire piste into a giant snow park complete with a 'chill-out area'. Now, with its new rails, kickers, fun boxes and frames – plus four distinct lines (Public, Fun, Pro and Jib) to let loose on, the park is ideal for beginners and professionals. The four-seat Sunjet chairlift ascends to lofty heights; perhaps Funjet would be a more apt name as it spans the entire length of the park, so you can get in plenty of runs and delight in breathtaking views. With Vans on board as partner for the snow park, Mayrhofen is perfectly positioned to establish itself as an international mecca in the freestyle scene.

There are 6 ski schools in Mayrhofen and Hippach, all with plenty of experience in teaching first time skiers and snowboarders adapt to the slopes.
